Pirate's Conquest

From the moment I first heard one song by Coeur De Pirate, the stage name for young Canadian Béatrice Martin, I've been obsessed with francophone indie music.

Not only her stunningly beautiful melodies, but also the sweet sounding of her lyrics (despite my French isn't quite good enough to keep up with them) have haunted me. Many people have criticized her sort of singing as merely "talking over songs", but I would disagree. Ok, it's true that she doesn't possess a great singing voice, but it's almost impossible not to be charmed by her warm, intimate vocals.

Béatrice is surely best known for the scandal that took place in 2009, when rumors circulated that she had been a nude model for a porn website while she was underage. Needless to say, it stirred up quite a commotion. Luckily her promising career didn't go awry!

It was quite a challenge to pick a few songs that stand out the most, but probably my own personal favorite ones are the following below. Good luck on your musical journey!

It's something hypnotizing about her voice, innit?

I wouldn't say she barely talks over the lyrics at all. Granted, not an astonishing voice but still very interesting.

I would propose a post about female vocals over piano, a few names pop up in my mind right away. Regina Spektor, Agnes Obel, Stephanie Nilles, Miss Li, Kate Nash, Fiona Apple, Mates of the State ....

Many thanks for the suggestion but I had already thought another way to focus on it.
